Travelling with Apolo

How gay group trips work: from booking to travelling together

Joining a group trip can be exciting and, at the same time, raise plenty of questions: can I come on my own? When will I meet the rest of the group? Will I have free time? Who coordinates the trip? Here is how an Apolo experience works from the moment you choose a departure until you return home.

Travel is about much more than changing location, taking photographs or adding another destination to a list. For many people in the community, travelling as an LGBTQ+ person also means finding an environment where they feel comfortable, sharing experiences with like-minded people and discovering the world with greater freedom.

That is the starting point for Apolo: creating gay group trips and LGBTQ+ experiences where the destination matters, but so does the way you experience it. We select accommodation, activities and partners carefully, explain what each departure includes and support the group throughout the experience.

The key idea: you can join on your own, as a couple or with friends. You do not need to form your own group or know anyone else beforehand.
The experience at a glance

How you can join
On your own, as a couple or with friends. Many people book without knowing anyone else in the group beforehand.
How it is organised
Each experience has its own programme, accommodation, activities, included services, excluded costs and booking conditions.
Who accompanies the group
An Apolo representative coordinates the planned arrangements throughout the programme and acts as a point of reference for the group.

What we aim for
To combine organisation, freedom and group experience so you can enjoy the destination without having to coordinate every detail yourself.
From interest to departure

How gay group trips work, step by step

Although each destination has its own conditions, the usual process can be understood in five stages. The individual trip page is always the reference for checking dates, price, accommodation, availability and specific services.

01

Choose a departure

Review the itinerary, pace, accommodation, room type and everything that is and is not included.

02

Request your place

Complete the registration and pay the deposit stated for that experience.

03

Receive confirmation

Apolo confirms the booking and explains the next payments and steps. Do not book transport until you receive the relevant instructions.

04

Prepare for the trip

Receive schedules, meeting point, documentation and recommendations; where applicable, you will also gain access to the group communication channel.

05

Enjoy the experience

The coordinator manages the programme arrangements and the group combines shared activities with the planned free time.

Travelling on your own

Arriving alone does not mean travelling alone

One of the most common barriers to taking a trip is not finding someone who is available. Matching holidays, budgets and travel plans across several friends is not always easy, and some destinations keep being postponed.

A group trip creates natural opportunities to talk, share experiences and meet other people.

On a gay group trip, you can join without knowing anyone beforehand. If you would like to explore this option in more detail, read our guide to travelling solo as a gay man. Sharing a visit, a meal, a transfer or an end-of-day conversation creates natural opportunities to connect without forcing anything.

That does not mean you have to be with other people at every moment. Everyone settles in at their own pace and keeps their independence within the possibilities of the itinerary.

Your way of travelling

You can come on your own, as a couple or with friends

If you are travelling solo

You do not need to find a travel companion before booking. If you choose a shared room, Apolo manages the room allocation according to the setup and availability of each departure.

If you are travelling as a couple

You can take part in group life while keeping time for yourselves. Let us know when you register so you can request to stay together, subject to the available options.

If you are travelling with friends

You can book together and leave the programme organisation to Apolo. It is best to communicate any room preferences from the start.

If you need a private room

Many departures allow you to request one for a supplement, depending on the accommodation. Check the trip page before booking if this is essential for you.

An important difference

Group size changes from trip to trip

Apolo favours formats that make the group experience and coordination easier, but there is no single maximum for every departure. A rural getaway, a cultural trip and an experience linked to a major event have different needs.

Capacity depends on the destination, accommodation, transport, activities and the type of group experience planned. Before booking, check the specific trip page: you will find the published group size there or can ask the team directly.

  • Smaller groups make it easier to create a closer group experience.
  • Slightly larger groups can make certain routes and services possible.
  • A minimum number of travellers may be required to confirm the departure.
  • Availability is updated on each experience page.
Support and independence

What the coordinator does and how much free time you will have

The Apolo representative coordinates the schedules, activities and suppliers included in the programme. They also support group communication and act as a point of reference for organisational issues.

The coordinator does not replace medical, consular or emergency services. The scope of the support and any included insurance are explained in the documentation for each departure.

An organised trip does not mean following a stopwatch all day. Itineraries may include time to rest, walk around, shop or explore independently. The amount and distribution of this free time varies by destination: a short break usually has a different pace from a ten-day trip.

The people are part of the destination

What travelling together is like within the group

A destination may impress you with its architecture, food or landscapes. Yet the most valuable memory often ends up being the people you shared it with.

Group life combines shared activities, conversation and personal space.

Travelling as a community does not mean travelling in a bubble or doing everything together. It means sharing a foundation of respect from which everyone can be themselves, talk naturally about their life and take part without having to play a role. If you want to compare formats, pace and group dynamics before booking, read our guide on how to choose an experience that suits you.

Apolo does not organise dating trips. The aim is to discover a destination in a comfortable and open LGBTQ+ environment. Any friendships, connections or stories that emerge are part of the experience, not a commercial promise.

Selection matters too

How we choose destinations, accommodation and activities

We do not simply look for a beautiful photograph or a list of landmarks. We assess the itinerary, accommodation, transport, activities, partners and the type of experience we want to create.

A cultural capital is not designed in the same way as a wellbeing retreat, a nature getaway or a beach holiday. We also consider the legal, social and cultural context of the destination so we can provide useful information and choose spaces and suppliers that fit the experience.

LGBTQ+ tourism does not have to be limited to bars, clubs or gay neighbourhoods either. Trips can combine heritage, gastronomy, nature, art, wellbeing, leisure and local culture. Each departure has its own personality and should let you know in advance what pace and atmosphere to expect.
