How much does a trip to Naples cost? Independent travel vs a group tour

A cheap flight to Naples is tempting. A few clicks, a weekend bag and the promise of pizza, extraordinary history and beautiful Mediterranean chaos. But once you add a hotel, transport, Pompeii, Mount Vesuvius and the experiences you actually want, that attractive airfare is only the beginning of your budget.

So how much does it cost to visit Naples, and is it better value to plan everything independently or book an organised group trip? The answer depends on what you want to do, the accommodation you choose and whether you are travelling alone or sharing a room.

We will compare flights, hotels, food, excursions, tickets and room supplements on an equivalent basis. As a real example, we will use Apolo's LGBTQ+ group trip to Naples, Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius, scheduled for 21–24 January 2027. We will also explain what you need to include when building your own independent itinerary.

This is not about declaring one way of travelling cheaper than another. It is about knowing what your money covers, what you still need to pay for and which experience suits the way you like to travel.

Comparing a fully planned cultural break with the cost of a flight and hotel room alone tells you very little. To make the numbers meaningful, compare the same dates, room type, activities and excluded expenses.

What does a trip to Naples cost? Start with the confirmed figures

Apolo's Naples trip offers a useful reference point because the package details are published. The journey runs from 21 to 24 January 2027, covering four days and three nights. It brings together accommodation, breakfast, guided cultural visits, food experiences and group coordination. Flights are separate.

Independent Naples trip or organised tour: compare the same experience

Suppose you find a good return flight and a modest room for three nights. It might be the start of a wonderful low-cost trip. But if your plans also include Pompeii, the volcano, a pizza-making class, underground Naples and the Archaeological Museum, there will be considerably more to book and pay for.

The fairest comparison uses the same length of stay, a similar accommodation standard and the activities you genuinely intend to do. If one option includes guides, transport, meals and attraction admissions while the other does not, add those items before comparing the total.

An independently organised trip can certainly cost less if you choose a cheaper property, skip activities or build a much simpler schedule. There is nothing wrong with that. Just remember that you are comparing different holidays, rather than equivalent ways of buying the same one.

How much should you budget for flights to Naples?

Airfares are often the first price people see and one of the least reliable figures to build a long-term travel budget around. They vary with departure airport, availability, flight times, booking date, baggage and changes to the fare conditions.

Apolo's product page mentions flight searches from Madrid and Barcelona for the January trip. Those figures were based on searches carried out on 9 September 2026. They are historical examples, not bookable prices guaranteed today, so we have not treated them as fixed travel costs here.

01 · Return flight

Check the whole journey

Search your actual departure dates and make sure arrival and departure times are compatible with the programme.

02 · Baggage

Look at the final fare

A low advertised price may not include the cabin bag or checked suitcase you intend to bring.

03 · Connections

Count travel hours

A cheaper itinerary with a long stopover could cost you valuable time on a four-day break.

04 · On arrival

Plan airport transport

Apolo includes an airport-to-hotel bus ticket. This is not the same as including flights or a private vehicle transfer.

Remember to check the return journey to the airport as well. The published Apolo package specifically includes the arrival bus ticket; it should not be assumed that a return airport transfer is included unless confirmed in the final booking documents.

Where to stay in Naples: why location affects your budget

A hotel is more than somewhere to sleep. In Naples, location affects how quickly you can move around, how easy it is to make day trips and how much you spend on local transport. Staying near useful connections can simplify the whole weekend, particularly when Pompeii is on your itinerary.

The accommodation planned for Apolo's January trip is the Hotel Nuovo Rebecchino 3*, at Corso Garibaldi 356, close to Napoli Centrale and Piazza Garibaldi. The neighbourhood provides access to several transport options, making it a practical base for organised visits and independent exploration.

For a fair independent comparison, search for a property in a similarly convenient area, with three nights, breakfast, a comparable room arrangement and clearly stated booking conditions. Comparing a centrally located hotel with breakfast against a remote room without breakfast or with additional taxes does not give you a meaningful answer.

Before booking accommodation independently: check the exact address, recent guest reviews, breakfast, local tourist tax, cancellation terms and the final price after taxes and fees. Also consider the time and expense of getting back after an evening out.

Shared or single room: a major difference when travelling alone

Room arrangements are especially important if you are travelling without a partner or friend. A per-person travel price often assumes two people sharing a room; it does not automatically mean a private room for every participant.

With Apolo, the basic Naples rate is based on a shared double or twin room. Travellers booking alone may be paired with another participant who has chosen the same arrangement, with preferences considered whenever possible. Anyone who prefers privacy can request a single room, subject to availability.

Room arrangementUntil 24 Oct 2026From 25 Oct 2026
Shared double/twin€600 per person€650 per person
Single room requested€700 per person€750 per person
Flights, insurance and extrasAdditionalAdditional

The single-room totals are the published package prices plus the €100 supplement. They are not a guarantee that a private room is available. If you are booking with a partner or friend, communicate your room preferences before confirming your place, including any double-bed or twin-bed requirements.

Travelling independently can mean paying the full cost of a room alone. Sharing an independently booked hotel room allows two people to divide that expense. Consequently, the comparison for a solo traveller can look very different from the budget for a couple.

Pompeii, Mount Vesuvius and the experiences that shape the price

Some travellers come to Naples mainly for its streets, food, cafés and atmosphere. Others want to explore Pompeii, see the volcano, visit important museums and learn something new along the way. That second itinerary inevitably involves more reservations, transport and admission costs.

To recreate Apolo's programme independently, you would need to arrange access to Pompeii, a guided visit if desired, transport to Mount Vesuvius, and separate admission or reservations for the cultural experiences in Naples. Buying a single archaeological site ticket is not equivalent to arranging a complete day excursion.

Pompeii deserves more than a quick photo stop. Time and historical context make a remarkable difference to the visit.

Pompeii offers the unusual experience of walking through the streets, houses, temples and public spaces of a Roman city buried by the eruption of AD 79. The Apolo itinerary includes transport by bus, site admission and a guided tour. The day also features lunch at Caupona, a restaurant designed around the atmosphere and culinary inspiration of ancient Pompeii.

Mount Vesuvius brings a different kind of encounter with the region. The volcanic landscape dominates the Bay of Naples, but access can change with weather conditions and park restrictions. Anyone booking independently should verify official access arrangements shortly before visiting and leave sensible margins between activities.

Mount Vesuvius combines striking natural scenery and Roman history. Access conditions and the weather should always be checked before travelling.

Do not forget the other experiences

Apolo's programme also features a Neapolitan pizza-making class with a tasting, a guided visit to the Galleria Borbonica and a visit to the National Archaeological Museum of Naples. The underground raft section at the Galleria Borbonica is included when available, not unconditionally guaranteed.

Each of these services belongs in an equivalent independent budget. You can absolutely arrange them yourself, but you will need to research admission fees, opening times, transport and booking availability. For a clearer picture of how to structure a short cultural visit, see Apolo's Spanish-language guide to what to see in Naples, Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius in four days.

Eating in Naples: what is included and what costs extra?

Naples is one of those cities where food is part of the reason you came. Pizza, coffee, pastries and street food provide just as much pleasure as its museums and monuments. Your budget, however, needs to reflect all the meals you will actually have during the trip.

Apolo's package includes three hotel breakfasts, a welcome dinner, lunch at Caupona and the food tasting during the pizza workshop. Other lunches and dinners, along with drinks and personal expenses that are not expressly included, remain your responsibility.

When travelling independently, think about whether you prefer spontaneous cafés and street food, proper restaurant meals or a mixture of both. Look at current menus before estimating your spending. A budget based entirely on inexpensive takeaway food should not be treated as equivalent to a holiday with a pre-booked themed dining experience.

A complete Naples budget: a practical way to calculate it

The simplest approach is to separate your confirmed package or reservation cost from the expenses still to pay. For the Apolo trip, the published package price and inclusions provide a starting point. For independent travel, use genuine quotes for your dates rather than estimated figures copied from travel articles.

Budget categoryApoloIndependent travel
Package or equivalent services€600 / €650 by booking dateHotel, breakfast, excursions, entries, meals and activities you actually want
Private room+€100 if confirmedSingle-occupancy or private-room rate
Return flightsAdd live fareAdd live fare
Travel insuranceAdd selected policyAdd selected policy
Meals outside the planAdd expected spendingAdd meals not otherwise budgeted
Transfers and personal expensesAdd excluded servicesInclude all connections and taxes

A simple numerical example

Imagine, for calculation purposes only, that a traveller sets aside €120 for return flights, €90 for food not included in the package and €30 for insurance. These are deliberately hypothetical amounts, not verified travel quotes or a recommended spending level.

Illustrative calculationSumTotal
Early shared-room package€600 + €120 + €90 + €30€840
Later shared-room package€650 + €120 + €90 + €30€890
Early single-room package€700 + €120 + €90 + €30€940
Later single-room package€750 + €120 + €90 + €30€990

Other personal expenses may still arise. The point is that a €600 package is not automatically a €600 total holiday, just as a €100 flight does not mean you can spend four days in Naples for €100.

Before saying that independent travel is cheaper, add the same three nights, the same type of room, the activities you genuinely want and every meal or connection still missing from the price.

Visiting Naples solo: freedom, room costs and company

If your friends are unavailable in January, there is no reason to abandon the idea of Naples. An independent trip gives you complete flexibility: you can choose your own timetable, stay longer at a museum or spend an afternoon following whatever catches your eye. You will also be responsible for each reservation, cancellation and change of plan.

An LGBTQ+ group trip offers another way to travel alone without being on your own for the whole experience. You can join without knowing anyone beforehand. A welcome dinner, guided outings and shared meals create opportunities to connect, while the itinerary still allows some independent time.

Before you book, confirm your room preference, how shared-room arrangements work, the group schedule and the communication process before departure. Our Spanish-language article on how LGBTQ+ group travel works explains the general approach to coordination and group life. Independent travel

Complete control

A great fit if you enjoy building itineraries, changing restaurants spontaneously and keeping entire days free for exploration.

Group travel

A shared experience

A good option if you prefer a prepared programme, a coordinator and natural opportunities to meet other travellers.

What our most recent Greece adventure reminded us

Some of the best things about travelling never appear on a receipt. A conversation after a museum visit, laughter during lunch or a group photo can become the part of the trip you remember most clearly months later.

On our most recent adventure in Greece, we shared places such as Athens, Delphi, Mycenae and Epidaurus. At the ancient theatre of Epidaurus, history and the simple pleasure of being there together came together in one of those spontaneous moments you cannot really plan. That balance of culture and companionship is something we hope to bring to Naples too, without pretending the two destinations are alike.

Naples independently or in a group: how to choose

There is no perfect answer for every traveller. Some people genuinely enjoy researching accommodation, arranging transport and getting every ticket just right. Others would rather start with a planned itinerary and spend their energy enjoying the destination. Both approaches can deliver a brilliant trip.

  • Decide whether your priority is Naples itself or also Pompeii, Vesuvius, museums and special activities.
  • Compare the same dates and number of hotel nights.
  • Confirm whether your price assumes sharing a room.
  • Add flights, insurance, independent meals and transport not included.
  • Think about the time you want to spend arranging tickets, providers and schedules.
  • Read payment and cancellation conditions before making a booking.
  • Ask yourself whether you want maximum independence or a shared cultural experience.

January is also a good time to consider shorter daylight hours, outdoor conditions and backup plans for rainy weather. Our Spanish-language guide to Naples in January covers seasonal planning, packing and ideas for the city.

The Apolo departure is planned for a group of 20 to 25 participants, with an initial €200 deposit towards the total price and a four-day itinerary. The departure is subject to the published contractual conditions and minimum group size, so make sure you understand those details before paying.

Is it cheaper to visit Naples independently or on a group tour?
