La Palma in an LGBTQ+ group: the awakening of your senses Some facts and curiosities about the island

Rock carvings and a leading role for Santa Cruz on Spain’s trade route with the "New World."

Mojo, gofio, and cheese are the island's star products. Of course, all enjoyed with a fine La Palma wine.

An island full of contrasts. You will go from its laurel forests in the north to a black, volcanic landscape in the south in the blink of an eye.

Colonial balconies in Santa Cruz de la Palma, silk in El Paso, and its famous summer festivals.

The island of La Palma stands out for its warm welcome to LGBTQ+ people. Its people are respectful and inclusive, and they hold an annual festival to celebrate diversity.

You won't find large crowds here. La Palma stands out for its tranquility and for a sustainable, low-density approach to tourism.

🌋 History and Geology: A Land Reinvents Itself

La Palma is the third youngest island of the Canarian archipelago, and that is evident in its untamed terrain. Its history is a fascinating blend of mythology and resilience:

  • The Legacy of the Benahoaritas:Before the Castilian conquest in the 15th century, the island was divided into 12 cantons ruled by the Benahoaritas. In places like the Belmaco Archaeological Park, you can still feel the energy of their rock carvings.
  • The Gateway to the Indies: During the Golden Age, Santa Cruz de La Palma was the third most important port in the world, after Antwerp and Seville. This wealth is visible today in its colonial mansions and its fairytale architecture.
  • The Tajogaite Volcano: The recent history of the island is marked by the 2021 eruption. Far from being just a scar, the new volcano has become a symbol of the force of nature, creating a black ash landscape that is, quite simply, from another planet.

🌿 Nature: A Three-Dimensional Spectacle

In La Palma, nature isn't just something you look at; you walk right through it. In August, visibility is perfect, and the island's microclimates allow you to change landscapes in a matter of minutes.

  • The Caldera de Taburiente: A volcanic circus 8 kilometers in diameter with vertical walls exceeding 1,000 meters. Walking through the Barranco de las Angustiasis a religious experience for any hiker.
  • Los Tilos Forest: Imagine a time tunnel back to the Tertiary Period. This laurel forest is one of the few remaining in the world, a humid, emerald-green ecosystem that looks like something straight out of Jurassic Park.
  • Natural Pools and Black Sand Beaches: From Charco Azul to Puerto Naos beach, the Atlantic here has a deep and therapeutic blue. Desde el Charco Azul hasta la playa de Puerto Naos, el Atlántico aquí tiene un azul profundo y terapéutico.
  • The Window to the Universe: La Palma is a Starlight Reserve. Thanks to the "Sky Law," light pollution is almost non-existent. Visiting the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory at 2,426 meters above sea level will make you feel as if you can touch the stars with your hand.

🥘 Gastronomy: The Taste of the "Isla Bonita"

La Palma’s cuisine is honest, hearty, and full of nuances. Here, local produce (Farm-to-table) isn't just a trend—it’s a tradition.

  • El Mojo Palmero: Whether it's red (spicy) or green (cilantro), it is the mandatory companion for papas arrugás.
  • Gofio Escaldado: A superfood inherited from the indigenous people, made from toasted grains and fish broth.
  • The La Palma Goat Cheese: With a Designation of Origin, it is smoked using Canary Island pine needles or almond shells.
  • Tea and Malvasía Wines: Vines that grow directly on lava, producing wines with a mineral and volcanic character that you won't find anywhere else in the world.
  • Royal Pastries: Don't leave without trying the Bienmesabe or the Almendrado.

🎭 Culture and Traditions: The Heartbeat of the Palmeros

Culture in La Palma is vibrant and colorful. Although the most famous event is the Bajada de la Virgen de las Nieves (every 5 years), the festive spirit is constant.

  • Balcony Architecture: The carved wooden balconies of Avenida Marítima are icons of the island, reflecting the mastery of local carpenters.
  • Living Craftsmanship: The silk from El Paso is the only one in Europe that is still produced manually using 16th-century techniques.
  • "Picturesque" Hospitality: The people of La Palma are easy-going, friendly, and have a sharp sense of humor. During the August festivals, the mix of Latin music and Canarian folklore creates a unique atmosphere of brotherhood.

🏳️‍🌈 LGBTQ+ Connection: A Beacon of Diversity in the Atlantic

La Palma is possibly one of the most progressive and safe islands for the LGBTQ+ community in Spain. Its commitment to visibility is not just aesthetic; it is structural.

  • Isla Bonita Love Festival: This event has transformed the island. It is not just a party, but a social project that includes business conventions, activism, and a massive concert featuring international artists. It is held in the summer and turns La Palma into the epicenter of Canarian pride.
  • Tazacorte: The Haven of Color: The municipality of Tazacorte is historically known for its open-mindedness. Its colorful streets and harbor are common meeting points for the community, where the rainbow flag flies with pride all year round.
  • Respectful Tourism: You won't find massive crowds here. Tourism in La Palma is high-quality and respectful of both the environment and people. It is the ideal destination for those seeking freedom without labels.

🌊 La Palma: Peace on the Shores of the Atlantic

You won't find mass tourism in La Palma like in other parts of Spain. Large tourist resorts are scarce, and there are no highways. But if what you want is to forget about the asphalt for a week, merge with nature, and enjoy one of the best skies in the world for stargazing, La Palma is the place for you.

Because August in La Palma is the perfect balance between the sea breeze and temperate nights under the Milky Way. We have designed this route so you won't miss a single corner, from the depths of the volcanic earth to the peaks of the highest mountains.
